Lucy Sinkular
Of Counsel Attorney

Lucy H. Sinkular, Of Counsel at Macias & Valley, brings decades of family law experience to client representation, mentoring, and pro bono service. As President-Elect of the State Bar of New Mexico, she draws on that experience to strengthen the legal profession and improve access to justice for New Mexicans.
Sinkular’s practice centers on complex, high-asset divorce and the financial puzzles those cases often present. Her financial cases begin with thorough preparation, giving clients a strong basis for settlement while keeping the matter ready for litigation if necessary. She has handled multimillion-dollar estates, closely held businesses, multi-jurisdictional assets, and military, federal, state and private retirement benefits. She is adept at tracing finances and identifying hidden assets. She knows which strings to pull, and in what order, to uncover concealed wealth. She especially enjoys this investigative work —following the financial trail so her client has a clear picture of the marital estate and can pursue a fair result.
She also handles selected adoption, kinship guardianship, child custody and support matters, and serves as a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem and settlement facilitator.
Decades of family law practice have also shaped Lucy’s approach to clients. She believes that experience has given her what she calls“useful empathy”– the ability to understand the difficulty a client is facing while helping that person distinguish between what may feel desirable and what is realistically achievable.
Sinkular has held significant leadership roles throughout the New Mexico legal profession, including service as State Bar Secretary/Treasurer and Second Judicial District Bar Commissioner, as well as leadership with the Family Law Section. She is a past president of the New Mexico Women’s Bar Association, serves on the New Mexico Supreme Court’s Domestic Relations Rules Committee, and maintains an active pro bono caseload.
Outside the law, Sinkular enjoys camping, cycling and hiking with her husband, whose military career has taken them around the world.
